YOUR MOVE, STEP BY STEP

You make the decisions. We guide the process.

Here’s what happens after you get in touch—and what your agent takes care of along the way.

01

Tell us about your move

Share where you’re moving from, whether you want to rent or buy, your approximate budget and timing. Add your work or university location, who is moving with you, and any must-haves.

You don’t need a perfect plan—or an exact neighborhood—to get started.

02

Meet your agent and make a plan

MoveToNYC connects you with a licensed real estate agent who covers your target area. Your agent contacts you personally, defines your priorities with you and explains the local process, representation and any applicable fee before you commit.

Your agent becomes your main point of contact throughout the search and transaction.

03

Explore your personalized property portfolio

Your agent puts together a shortlist around your needs, checks availability and helps you compare neighborhoods, commute, space and overall costs. They explain rental buildings, condos and co-ops so you understand the options.

You review the portfolio and tell us what you like. We refine the search with your feedback.

04

Tour from wherever you are

Your agent arranges in-person viewings or live video tours. Ask questions as they walk through the property, show its layout and condition, and discuss the building, amenities and surroundings.

Your agent helps you compare the options without expecting you to travel for every viewing.

05

Choose a property and negotiate

With your approval, your agent contacts the listing agent, owner or building management, confirms the conditions, presents your offer and negotiates price, timing and other terms where possible.

You decide what to offer and which terms to accept. Negotiated outcomes depend on the other party.

06

Prepare the application or purchase paperwork

Your agent explains the required documents, helps check your package for completeness and follows up on outstanding items. For a purchase, they coordinate next steps with your attorney and lender, if applicable. For condos or co-ops, they help with the board package or interview preparation when required.

Requirements vary by property. We help you understand what is needed, who needs it and when.

07

Move through approvals and signing

Your agent tracks responses, relays questions and coordinates with the people involved. For a rental, they help organize lease signing once you have reviewed and accepted the terms. For a purchase, they coordinate with your attorney, lender and the other side through closing.

Before you move forward, you know the next steps, required payments and relevant deadlines.

08

Get ready for move-in—and get your keys

Your agent coordinates the final walkthrough where applicable, confirms the building's move-in instructions and helps organize access, including elevator arrangements when required. They arrange your in-person key handover once the transaction is complete and access is authorized.

You arrive with a clear move-in plan and a local person to meet you.

WHAT YOUR AGENT HANDLES

There’s more to your move than finding a listing.

A PLAN THAT FITS YOUR GOAL

Renting and buying take different paths.

If you’re renting

For leases of 12 months or longer, we focus on a home that fits your move date, budget and the building’s requirements.

  • Check availability, lease terms and building requirements.
  • Clarify income, student documentation and guarantor requirements where applicable.
  • Help organize the application and follow up with management.
  • Coordinate lease signing, move-in rules and the keys.

If you’re buying

Your agent shapes the search around whether you want a primary home, a place for your family or an investment property.

  • Compare properties, ownership types, ongoing costs and relevant building restrictions.
  • Present your offer and negotiate the commercial terms with your approval.
  • Coordinate with your attorney and lender on due diligence, contracts, financing and closing.
  • Support board-package preparation where required and coordinate the final walkthrough and handover.

Your attorney handles legal advice and contract review; lenders handle financing decisions. Tax, legal, mortgage and moving services are provided separately by the relevant professionals.

STARTING FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY?

You can start before you land.

Moving for university, work or a new chapter? Your agent helps you understand the market and make progress while you’re still abroad.

A practical plan for a remote move

  • Viewings and conversations arranged around your time zone and agent availability.
  • Live tours where you can ask questions in real time.
  • Neighborhood guidance around your commute, preferred surroundings and priorities.
  • A clear list of documents and any steps that need your direct involvement.
  • Move-in coordination and an in-person key handover when you arrive.

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

A few things you may be wondering.

When should I contact you?

As soon as you have an approximate move date or purchase plan. We can discuss neighborhoods and preparation early, then agree on the right time to begin active viewings. Availability and approval timelines vary by property and building.

Can I rent without US credit or US income?

Tell us your circumstances early. Your agent can ask buildings what documentation they accept and whether guarantor options are available. Requirements differ, and approval is always the landlord’s or building’s decision.

Can I complete everything from abroad?

Your agent can handle the search, video tours and much of the coordination remotely. They confirm which documents, signatures, interviews or appointments require your participation and whether any step needs to happen in person.

What does it cost?

The initial conversation is free and carries no obligation. Before you engage an agent, that agent explains representation, any fee payable by you and when it is due in writing. For NYC rentals, a landlord’s broker fee cannot be passed to a tenant; if you choose to hire your own agent, a separate agreed fee may apply. Other property and transaction costs are discussed separately.

Will I have the same person throughout?

MoveToNYC introduces you to an agent covering Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island or New Jersey. That agent, licensed for the property's location, is your main contact and provides brokerage services through their brokerage. MoveToNYC stays in touch about your experience.

Can you help in my language?

We work in English and Spanish. If you prefer another language, tell us in your inquiry and we’ll check whether an agent who speaks it is available.
